THE LOCKOUT

All of the buildup of success that the Nashville Predators experienced during the 2003–04 season was abruptly put on hold for the 2004–05 season—because it didn’t happen. On September 16, 2004, the National Hockey League went on a shutdown that would kill the entire season, making it the first time in over eighty years that the Stanley Cup would not be awarded.

“I guess you’d have to say it’s equal for everybody. This happened twice, and it’s very disruptive and it can affect you, but for us it didn’t too much,” said David Poile on the lockout.

And he was right. The following season, the Nashville Predators made the playoffs again. This time, they actually acquired their biggest free agent signing for the team to date.

“The most interesting thing, I was back in western New York when the lockout ended, and then all of a sudden my phone is blowing up because Paul Kariya decided he wanted to come to Nashville,” said Pete Weber.
